Au/Aw is for the Awesome Auk

Au is for Auk and the way these two are coming together they are almost forming a capital "A."

Once I flip this picture in the opposite direction at home on my Mac it will look like an small "a" facing in the right direction.

Ar is for Aardvark

Ar makes the sound in the beginning of Aardvark, and we can imagine a capital "A" framed in the body of this Aardvark standing up tall:
